capn mike,
I spent four years at TBS (The Basic School), Quantico, VA, assisting in the training of EVERY SINGLE Commissioned and Warrant Officer in the Marine Corps, that attended basic Officer's training 1986-1990. They also go through OCS (Officers Candidate School) at Quantico, but at a different location ("Main-Side"). I also had the "pleasure" of dealing with Naval R.O.T.C., and Naval Academy Cadets, that went through "Bulldog Training", as well as some foreign military personnel. I remember, as the Cold War wasn't yet over at that time, when the Soviet Defense Minister and a Russian General were invited to attend one of our combined arms, live fire exercises. We were told later that after watching the performance, both had said that they would rather not face such forces in combat.

THAT made our day!

Until you see infantry (with light and heavy and machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars, TOW and Dragon missiles), tanks, am tracks, artillery, helicopters, and tactical aircraft all working together, you haven't seen fireworks!

That's why I kind of chuckle when I here everyone talking about the "Shock and Awe" campaign that will probably happen in Iraq. It is just a politically correct term for the combined arms doctrine the Marine Corps developed in the 1930s, and was used by the Germans in WWII. It is known as "Blitzkrieg" (The Lightning War).

I guess with all the negative connotations of anything associated with Nazis, and with the Lunatic Left-wing Loonies calling President Bush "Hitler", "Shock and Awe" is better than "Blitzkrieg". After all, some of the LLL might be stupid enough to also make the comparison between "Blitzkrieg" and "storm troopers". I don't think it would be too smart, on their part, to paint U.S. troops in such a manner.

What do you think?

.sarge...for my own sanity, I remind myself daily that the US military has been the best in the world for 200 years....no matter WHO sat in the White House.
...the way terms are coined and used, like 'shock and awe',(piss poor) reflects the damage done to society as a whole when military service is looked down upon as either a career or stepping stone... most vets don't talk that way..
..the percentage of Americans in the work force that are veterans is finally edging up after a decline of 25 years... America needs vets; we bridge the gap between the unknown of the present military and the known of the recent past....for good and/or ill.
...speaking ill or stupidly of the military just isn't done when a couple of 200lb ex-navy deck apes, or even a single skinny marine is around....at least not more than once. All kidding aside,America needs this control mechanism... without it, we lose our perspective of what America and liberty are all about. We gotta have someone, on every street corner, in every school, workplace and post office, that has BEEN THERE,..and can explain the difference...
Dissing soldiers, sailors and airmen by silly references to Hitler and the storm troupers is just plain, old fashioned ignorant....doing so displays a cluelessness about the country and the world......people that do so should be pitied.... ...loudly.....like someone who walks out into the street forgetting to put on his pants....

...I've read this piece three times now.... it's unsettling in that it kinda makes sense, but I don't like what it says.
...I'm putting it out (uncharacteristically) without having an opinion about it..... maybe after another reading or two...
